What is 5-MeO-DMT?

5-MeO-DMT is a naturally-occurring compound found in the protective secretions of the Bufo alvarius also known as the Colorado River Toad along with plants such as Dictyoloma incanescens, Anadenanthera peregrina, Phalaris arundinacea, and Virola theiodora. It is a powerful but short-acting psychedelic in the tryptamine family (specifically the Fast-Acting Tryptamine subset) that has the notable ability to produce unitive experiences that have been previously correlated with positive therapeutic outcomes (Davis et al., 2019; Garcia-Romeu et al., 2014; Griffiths et al., 2018). It also produces few if any visual effects, unlike most other psychedelics. It has been used for spiritual and therapeutic purposes in underground settings and has become increasingly popular over the years. It has been found to produce long-lasting benefits (Uthaug et al. 2019) such as reductions in anxiety and depression after a single use, even for those who were not using it for those purposes (Davis et al., 2019). Because of its short-acting yet powerful effects, it could be used in a much briefer psychedelic therapy that would be much less costly and more accessible to patients.

What is Microdosing?

Microdosing is the practice of taking 1/10th to 1-20th of a full dose of a psychedelic substance (Fadiman & Korb, 2019) to achieve a sub-hallucinogenic (though not always sub-perceptual) effect in order to achieve some of the benefits of that substance without experiencing a full psychedelic “trip” or “journey”. For those who use LSD, Passie (2019) has described the microdosing range to be 20µg and lower.  Those who microdose report doing so for a variety of reasons: mood improvement, heightened creativity, cognitive enhancement, reduction of frequency and intensity of headaches, pain relief, greater sense of social connection, greater attention to health and self-care activities, etc.
